Medication Safety Part 2

MEDICATION SAFETY (PART 2)

Visits to your Pharmacy:

The next step for medication safety is communication with your pharmacist. Your pharmacist is a great source of information and assistance in medication management. Again, be very comfortable asking questions and seeking advice on every visit. Here are some tips to working well with your pharmacist:

Make an informed choice is which pharmacy to use. Make a list of what you need in a pharmacy – location(s), pricing, pharmacy hours. Choose the one that best suits your needs

  1. Take a list of your medications with you on your trip to the pharmacy. Be sure you include over-the-counter medications as well and don't forget any medications you may receive via mail order. If you pharmacy maintains a list of your medications, be sure it is always up-to-date.

  2. When you purchase a new medication, be sure to check out the name, dosage and usage instructions. Verify it is the medication which your doctor explained to you in your office visit.

  3. Ask your pharmacist about warnings, interactions with foods and other drugs, side effects and any necessary follow-up that needs to be conducted due to taking this medication.

  4. Examine the packaging of the medication. Is it easy for your to open?

  5. Check the refills allowed so that you are aware of timing when you need to call in a refill. (If you run out of refills it will take longer to get the medication refilled as the pharmacist will need to be in contact with your doctor for approval.)
