Signs of Unsafe Senior Drivers
SIGNS OF UNSAFE SENIOR DRIVERS
One of the most difficult tasks to perform is taking away someone's right to drive a motor vehicle. In a very real way you are taking away their freedom. Keep in mind that as difficult as this situation is, you are protecting the Senior and everyone on the road from a very real safety hazard.
Below are some warning signs to watch for in your loved one so that you will know it is time to step in for safety:
1. Is the person not following the speed limit? Do they go too fast, too slow and/or alternate speeds often when the limit has not changed?
2. Does this person's car drift back and forth into other lanes?
3. Do distractions seem to overly upset them – such as the radio or conversation in the car?
4. Are they tailgating the car in front of them?
5. Do they forget to fasten their seat belt?
6. Do they use the brake when they mean to press the gas pedal and vice versa?
7. Do they turn from an outside lane?
8. Do they forget to use turn signals?
9. Do they not react to things as quickly as they should? For example, when someone pulls out in front of them do they not brake until the last seconds?
10. Do they get irritated quickly at other drivers over minor occurrences?
11. Do they no longer seem to be able to concentrate on their driving?
12. Do they seem overly tense when behind the wheel?
13. Do they have difficulty following simple directions?
14. Do they get lost when going somewhere that they have been previously?
15. Have you found that their insurance rate has been increased recently?
16. Have they been pulled over recently and often for driving infractions?
17. Do they have unexplained dents and dings on their car?
18. Do they seem reluctant to drive in the rain?
19. Do they seem reluctant to drive at night?
20. Do they seem reluctant to drive very far?
21. Do they seem reluctant to drive during rush hour traffic?
22. Are they worn out after driving?
