AGING IN PLACE-SIGNS HELP IS NEEDED
AGING IN PLACE – SIGNS HELP IS NEEDED
“Aging in Place” is a popular phrase heard today. All is actually means is living where you choose even as you grow older. Statistics show that at least 73% of people over 65 say they want to live where they currently reside and not be forced to make a move in their lifetime.
If you have someone you care about who is in their senior years, you will want to “tune in” to the signs that tell you this person may need assistance to age in place. The following is a list of signs that if seen should cause you to ask some questions and step up your observations so that you can investigate ways to help your loved one live where they choose:
-
Bruises, scrapes and cuts and/other signs of falls – falling is very dangerous for all of us but especially dangerous for seniors. A broken hip has often been the precursor for a senior moving from their home.
-
Staying home more often – if your loved one has quit attending church, the hair dresser, the movies, and/or outings with friends this could be a sign of a physical or emotional problem.
-
Unexplained weight loss – this could indicate a problem grocery shopping or preparing meals. It also could be caused by a decrease in interest in food.
-
Burnt pots and pans – this may be due to forgetfulness and/or a loss in their ability to hear.
-
Appearance change – if personal hygiene has changed this is a cause for concern for appearance and health reasons.
-
Decline in condition of home – if the condition of the home, inside or outside, has changed, the reasons for the change need to be explored.
-
Utilities being turned off – if bills are not being paid on a regular basis and before the due date this could cause the home to be without utilities for a period of time.
Stay in touch with your loved ones. If you reside out of town, find someone locally to check in on them regularly to gauge their safety and well being. If any of the signs are there that they may need some assistance, start your investigation into ways to help them stay safe and stay at home!
