SAFE AT HOME – Home Safety for Behaviors

Some of our elderly family and friends start staying busy by rummaging through their belongings regularly and then placing things “safely away”. Unfortunately, often this results in the inability to locate needed items. Here are some tips for protecting them and others when they exhibit these behaviors:

  • Make sure all dangerous chemicals kept in their home are put away – out of sight, out of mind. If you are able to actually place a lock on the location of these items this is a bonus!

  • Keep an eye on items in the fridge. Often the person is looking for a snack but cannot easily identify spoiled items.

  • Remove valuable items from the home that could be placed somewhere and lost or easily broken.

  • Lock up important papers in a lock box.

  • Close off rooms that have no use to your loved ones which will limit the areas that items can be misplaced.

  • Go through the home and know where the possible hiding places are located. You will then be able to periodically look in these locations when items are missing.

  • Create a place for your loved one that is safe in which they can freely rummage and re-arrange. This gives them something to safely do when they become restless.

  • Have a system for mail retrieval. Often mail is lost and this can cause problems for bill payment or receipt of checks.

  • Remove garbage cans from sight. Your loved one may forget what they are and what they are used for and dig through the items that are contained within the cans.

  • Never remove trash from the home without looking through it for items that were accidentally placed in the can.
