Keeping Seniors Active - Holiday Activites!

Keeping Seniors Active – During the Holidays and Every Day!

Holidays can be stressful for all of us. For some they also lead to depression. In the elderly, depression and the holidays may come from many factors such as:

  • Financial limitations in gift-giving

  • Loss of independence – for shopping and holiday events

  • Being alone or being separated from those close to them

  • Loss of mobility and or a problem attending a religious service

One possible way to minimize the stress of the holidays is to come up with some great ways to keep your senior busy. The following are some activity ideas for the upcoming holiday season:

  1. Have fun with food! Make cookies – make candies – have your senior do as much as he/she can with your help.

  2. Make decorations! Your senior can help string garlands using a long, heavy thread and a darning needle.

  3. Put together a photo album from holidays past! This is a great keepsake and can start lots of great conversation.

  4. Play holiday music! This will also be great to start memories and wonderful conversations.

  5. Exercise! It may sound like work but you can make it fun. It also gives an upswing to mood and is great for their health.

  6. Participate in a computer class! Have your senior learn basics so they can enjoy websites and emailing.

  7. Journal! Have your senior write down their thoughts and feelings. This is a great way to pass time and can be very creative.

Whatever you find to do with your loved ones during the holidays, enjoy their company and let them enjoy yours. Cherish the old memories and make new ones!
