Stay strong, stay healthy, stay home!
Stay strong, stay healthy, stay home!
After our 20's we start to lose some muscle mass. This means we are not as strong as we were and our metabolism is negatively affected. We need less calories to keep at our same weight, so even though we may be eating the same amount of food, we may be gaining weight!
You can work on keeping your weight at your desired level by exercising and eating healthy. This will also help you maintain muscle strength and tone which is a bonus! Two forms of exercise should be part of our routine for the rest of our lives. One form is aerobic and one is strength training. The combination will help us maintain an independent lifestyle and let us continue to enjoy activities of choice.
Below are some great tips for exercising safely and sensibly:
-
Have a thorough medical check up to obtain doctor approval for your exercise program.
-
Develop a plan for aerobic and strength – if you need assistance in making your plan, speak with a professional personal trainer.
-
Start slowly if you are not currently exercising – build up your routine slowly!
-
Don't overestimate how quickly you will realize results. Give yourself time to see and feel changes in both how you look and how you feel.
-
Realize it takes time to form new habits. Be patient with yourself taking time to develop these new healthy habits knowing that it does get easier!
-
Breathe in and out during exercise. Holding your breath can cause your blood pressure to increase.
-
Be sure to increase your fluid intake (as long as a medical condition does not prohibit this). You may not feel thirsty but still you will need extra fluids. Water is best!
-
Keep your back straight when bending.
-
Warm up before beginning
-
Do not think feeling pain is normal. There may be some soreness, discomfort or a tad of weariness but not pain!
